What Soft Life Means and How to Begin Living It
I knew from the time I was pregnant that I didn’t want my daughter’s childhood (or my own motherhood) to be defined by constant hustle. I wanted calm mornings and unstructured days that felt rooted in connection — not just survival. That’s when I began leaning into the idea of the soft life.
I have always been one to “live life to the fullest”, and admittedly tend to overload my schedule and exhaust myself trying to do it all. When I became a solo mother in 2021, I had a deep sense that the new “living life to the fullest” would involve slowing down, saying no to many external requests, blocking out my calendar with “time at home” and really savoring the early years with my child. I wanted a softer, more gentle approach to life as a solo mama.
In this post, I’ll share what the soft life really means, why it matters so much for solo mamas, and how you can begin to invite softness into your days — even in the busiest seasons of motherhood.
What Is the “Soft Life”?
The “soft life” at its core, is about making intentional choices that prioritize ease, alignment, and joy over constant hustle.
For solo mothers, the soft life looks different. It’s not about escaping responsibility but about reshaping it.
- cooking simple, nourishing meals that don’t drain your energy
- creating a life that fits within your budget to ease financial strain
- creating a bedtime routine that works for you and your child instead of forcing a rigid schedule
- leaving room in your day for unhurried play, slow walks, or simply pausing to savor a cup of tea in silence
Living softly doesn’t mean we avoid challenges. It means we face them with a mindset built on the foundation of our intentions and allow that to guide us. Softness, in this sense, is a form of strength — the kind that comes from being rooted, intentional, and willing to honor your own needs alongside your child’s.
Put simply: the soft life as a solo mama is about crafting a life that feels nourishing rather than depleting. It’s a mindset and a practice of choosing calm, connection, and simplicity — over and over again.
Why the Soft Life Matters for Solo Mamas
Solo motherhood is both beautiful and demanding. When you’re the only adult in the household, every role falls to you — provider, decision-maker, nurturer, problem-solver, planner. There’s no one to tag in at the end of a long day, so you can have a few moments to reset and recharge. That weight can leave you running on empty, living in survival mode, and constantly chasing the next task.
The pressure is real, and so is the fatigue. Our culture often celebrates hustle, telling mothers that we should be able to do it all and make it look effortless. But the truth is: no one can thrive in a state of constant push. And that’s exactly why the soft life matters so deeply for solo mamas.
When we embrace softness, we give ourselves permission to slow down, simplify, and reimagine what motherhood can feel like. It doesn’t mean life becomes magically easy — it means we choose to let go of the unnecessary weight and expectations so we can prioritize what truly matters.
Here are just a few of the gifts the soft life offers:
- Emotional ease. Letting go of hustle culture reduces stress, anxiety, and burnout. A softer life opens space for joy, laughter, and presence — the moments our kids remember most.
- Practical relief. Simple systems (like meal prepping or resetting your home weekly) lighten the load of daily decision-making. They create more flow and fewer frantic scrambles.
- Deeper connection. When you aren’t running in survival mode, you’re more available for the things that make motherhood rich: bedtime snuggles, curious conversations, and shared adventures.
For me, embracing softness has looked like building slower mornings into our routine, planning easy meals that fuel us without fuss, and learning to say no to things that drain my energy. These shifts have allowed me to find a sense of peace amongst the imperfections – this comes from aligning my actions with my intentions.
The Pillars of a Soft Solo Mama Life
The soft life isn’t something you “arrive at” overnight. It’s built one gentle choice at a time, through small shifts that gradually transform how your days feel. For solo mamas, I’ve found that four key pillars help create the foundation for living softly.
1. Intentional Routines
Routines often get a bad reputation for being rigid or boring, but in truth, they’re one of the most loving gifts we can give ourselves as solo mothers. A thoughtful rhythm removes decision fatigue, creates predictability for our kids, and gives us space to breathe.
This doesn’t mean every moment is scheduled or perfect — it means anchoring your days with touchpoints of calm. Maybe that’s five minutes with your morning coffee before your child wakes, a shared breakfast ritual on days off, or a Sunday evening reset to set the week in motion.
For me, a simple evening routine has been game-changing: tidying the kitchen, prepping school bag & lunch for the following day, and laying out my own book for a few minutes of quiet before bed. These small steps signal to my brain that the day is complete and make mornings less rushed. (and let me tell you, we are NOT morning people – we need all the help we can get!)
2. Simplified Living
When you’re carrying so much on your own, every extra layer of “stuff” — physical clutter, unnecessary tasks, endless commitments — adds to the weight. Simplifying isn’t about living in a stark or minimal home; it’s about creating systems that lighten your load and give you more space for what matters. In particular, the early childhood years come with a heavy load for parenting, we want to create systems that ease this load as we navigate this season.
This might look like organizing a capsule wardrobe so laundry is simpler, rotating toys so cleanup is easier, or out-sourcing household tasks as you are able to (house cleaner, gardening service, laundry, meal prep). It’s about releasing the things that make you feel scattered or overwhelmed and embracing rhythms that create ease.
A soft solo mama life isn’t about doing everything; it’s about doing less with more intention.
3. Nourishing the Body
Softness includes caring for your body — in a way that feels nurturing and kind. Food, exercise and rest are a big part of this nurturing. As solo mamas, it’s tempting to skip meals, snack on our kids’ leftovers, or grab whatever is easiest. But our energy, mood, and patience are directly tied to how well we’re nourished.
That doesn’t mean elaborate recipes. It means choosing meals that are simple, healthy, and sustainable for your real life. A batch of overnight oats, a sheet pan of roasted veggies, or a balanced snack board can be enough. The point isn’t perfection — it’s balance.
Nourishment also includes rest, hydration, and movement that feels good (a walk around the block, a spin class, strength training, stretching before bed). When you honor your body, you show your children that self-care is both normal and necessary.
4. Soulful Connection
At the heart of the soft life is connection — with our children, with ourselves, and with the world around us. This is what makes the slower, simpler days worth it.
Connection doesn’t have to be grand gestures. It can be as small as putting sprinkles on a bowl of oatmeal, playing a game together, sharing a moment of gratitude at bedtime or building family rituals your child will remember for years. Travel, too, becomes part of this pillar — not to check off a bucket list, but to create shared experiences that shape your bond.
And don’t forget self-connection. Journaling, meditating, or simply going for a walk with your thoughts helps you hear your own voice amid the noise. The more rooted you are in yourself, the more grounded you’ll feel as a mama.
Together, these four pillars — intentional routines, simplified living, nourishment, and soulful connection — create a framework for living the soft life as a solo mother. They remind us that softness is not an unattainable luxury, but a choice we can make daily to care for ourselves and our families with more presence and peace.
How to Begin Living the Soft Life as a Solo Mama
When you’re carrying the responsibilities of solo motherhood, the idea of living a “soft life” can feel sometimes feel out of reach – I’ve definitely been there at times! But here’s the truth: softness doesn’t require an overhaul of your entire life. It begins with one small, intentional choice at a time.
The beauty of this approach is that it’s flexible — you get to decide what feels doable and nourishing in your current season. Here are a few ways to begin:
– Start with your biggest energy drain
Think about the part of your day or week that feels most overwhelming. Is it mealtime? Laundry? Bedtime routines? Instead of trying to fix everything at once, choose one area and soften it.
- If dinners feel stressful, try batch cooking a couple of meals on Sunday so weekday evenings flow easier.
- If mornings are chaotic, prep clothes, bags, and lunches the night before – or batch prep on the weekends.
- If cleaning feels endless, try a 10-minute nightly tidy with your child to share the load.
Small adjustments in high-stress areas can create dramatic results.
– Create a daily “soft life moment”
Softness thrives in the pauses. Choose one thing each day that feels grounding for you — start with 5-10 minutes and make it non-negotiable. Ideas:
- Sipping your coffee before checking your phone.
- Journaling for five minutes after bedtime.
- Taking a short walk or stretch between tasks.
These micro-moments don’t erase the hard parts of motherhood, but they give you a chance to breathe and anchor you in peace.
– Batch and simplify where you can
Softness often comes from preparation, not perfection. Look for ways to reduce decision fatigue:
- Rotate the same 2–3 breakfasts and lunches each week.
- Batch freezer meals such as breakfast burritos or sandwiches for lunch boxes.
- Keep a running grocery list on your phone.
- As you fold laundry, put together outfits for the week and make them easily accessible for mornings.
By systemizing small tasks, you free up mental space for presence and creativity throughout the week.
– Let go of the myth of perfection
Living softly isn’t about curating a flawless life. It’s about allowing life to be messy, human, and real — while choosing a gentler pace within it. Give yourself permission to leave the laundry unfolded, say no to the extra commitment, or order takeout on the nights you’re too tired to cook. Be realistic, know your limits and prioritize rest over burnout.
Softness means reminding yourself that you’re enough as you are, right now.
Starting small is the key. With every gentle step, you’ll notice more breathing room in your days, more laughter with your kids, and more space for joy. This is not an overnight fix or “one and done” method, it’s about consciously reflecting on your intentions and shifting your habits to create a life aligned with those intentions. Over time, these small shifts begin to weave together a life that feels lighter, more peaceful, and deeply nourishing.
“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”
