Money is one of the most tender relationships we have — especially as solo mamas. Every dollar carries a story, a choice, and a chance to create more peace in our daily lives.
When we’re juggling everything — childcare, groceries, bills, and the tiny extras that make life feel human — money can start to feel heavy. It can feel like something that happens to us, not something we move with intention. But what if, instead, we began to see money as energy — a flow that we can guide in ways that support the life we’re building?
Introducing intentional spending into your rhythm can help us make small shifts that build confidence and ease into our financial plan. Over the past year, I have slowly been making small shifts in my spending, and I am SHOCKED how much ease it has brought to (and how much guilt has been relieved from) the mental energy around my finances.

The Cost of Unconscious Spending
Unintentional spending doesn’t usually come from carelessness — it often comes from exhaustion. It can sneak in over time as we’re subjected to an endless barrage of marketing. An online shopping “treat” promises to make things easier. We subscribe to something we meant to cancel, but life gets in the way…
These small, reactive decisions add up — not just in our bank accounts, but in our energy.
We end up feeling slightly off-balance without knowing why. This might show up by being surrounded by stuff you once needed or wanted but now seems like clutter. It could also should up in feelings of guilt or anger around giving money to companies whose values are not aligned with yours.
This isn’t about guilt, shame or restriction. And it’s not about changing everything at once (I’ve been working on this for years!). It’s about awareness. When we notice where our money is going, we can start to see what it’s saying about what we truly value — or where we’ve drifted out of alignment.
Intentional Spending: Reconnecting with What Matters Most
Before any budget app or spending tracker, the most powerful tool you have is your awareness.
Ask yourself:
- Where do I want my money to vote — local business, sustainability, community, health, rest, or education?
- What experiences, moments, or things make me feel most alive and grounded?
- What do I want to model for my child about money, gratitude, and choice?
Your answers become your compass. They reveal what truly matters to you — not what the world says you should care about, but what genuinely brings peace and meaning to your life.

Matching Spending to Your Values
Once you’re clear on your core values, the next step is simply realignment.
Here are a few examples:
- Connection → investing in family trips, cozy dinners at home, or a day exploring your own city.
- Health → nourishing food, therapy, movement, or rest days without guilt.
- Simplicity → quality over quantity, decluttering unused subscriptions, and creating space instead of clutter.
- Community → supporting local businesses, seeking out members of your own community support (i.e. other solo mamas, women, minorities), or charitable giving to organizations you believe in.
Intentional spending doesn’t mean spending less (although that’s definitely a possibility). It means spending with purpose. It’s knowing that your money is moving in ways that support your peace, not chip away at it.
Practical Steps to Intentional Spending
A few gentle ways to start:
- Audit with compassion. Look over your last month of spending — highlight what felt aligned and what didn’t. No shame, just awareness.
- List your intentional spending values. Make them concrete. Write them at the top of your budget spreadsheet. Put them on your vision board.
- Pause before purchasing. Ask yourself: Does this support the life I’m building?
- Redirect. When you notice spending that’s no longer serving you, re-channel those dollars into something that does — your travel fund, a course, a cozy home upgrade, or savings.
- Revisit often. Values shift as we grow. Recheck your alignment each season, if you have a shift in income or expenses, or whenever life feels off balance.
The Peace of Alignment in Intentional Spending
When your spending matches your values, you begin to feel it — not just in your bank account, but in your nervous system.
There’s a calm confidence in knowing where your money goes and why.
Gratitude grows, because even small purchases feel purposeful.
Money starts to feel less like control, and more like collaboration.
You can breathe easier knowing your finances reflect what you believe in.

A Gentle Reflection
Take a quiet moment this week to ask yourself:
Where can I choose to spend — or not spend — in a way that honors my peace?
Even one small shift can ripple outward. Over time, these tiny choices create a life where your money, your values, and your energy all flow in the same direction.
